Astrology

I presume that most of the scientific community refutes Astrology as being full of air. Although, astrology is a science.

It is not Newtonian Mechanics. It does not tell you if something happens (cause), then something else will happen (effect).

It is a science of probability. It says that if something has happened (cause), what are the chances of something else happening (effect). To add to that, it also gives you solutions (upayas) to get things done in your favor.

I did some research on Astrology recently. Of course, the newspaper articles mentioning same thing would happen to all the people born under the same dates is totally crap.

Although, if you get a horoscope made, it may be able to guide you about the good things that can happen in your life and how to enhance those effects. Also, it can tell you about the not so good things that may happen in your life and how to reduce or nullify those effects.

This would give a restless mind some peace. A more organized mind might find knowing about the future boring. (who doesn’t like surprises!)

For this, accurate information on your time and place of birth is needed. There are many more factors involved but not enough research exists in this field in present times. The astrologer has to be thorough enough to know what he is doing. So, the results should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Related things like wearing stones and gems have their effect. Chanting, meditation etc are remedial and said to be much more powerful.

So, the position of the planets, the date and place of you birth etc can be correlated with the events in your life! It is all very fascinating, like quantifying the theory of Karma!

  2. Well, astrology is a very interesting subject, since it has evolved as a kind of religion for many years. However, its value as a science is null. It does not predict anything of value and is based on an explanation of the universe that has long been invalidated. As stated in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrology): “Astrology has been rejected by the scientific community as having no validity or explanatory power for describing the universe (a pseudoscience). Among other issues, there is no proposed mechanism of action by which the positions and motions of stars and planets could affect people and events on Earth that does not contradict well understood basic aspects of biology and physics. Scientific testing of astrology has found no evidence to support any of the premises or purported effects outlined in astrological traditions. Where astrology has made falsifiable predictions, it has been proven wrong.”

Don’t think science has always been against Astrology. In fact, much of science grew out of Astrology and simply applied proven methods of enquiry, finding nothing valuable in this tradition.

    Cheers!

  3. True, if you believe the existing science which gives ‘fixed’ results then it is not a science.

It starts with a scientific enquiry and outgrows the baby steps of ‘science’ by giving correlations and probability.

It can definitely give a lot of value and it does not contradict anything.
