Economic prosperity is necessary but not sufficient for a nation to flourish. No wonder, the West is in disarray with rampant racism, huge income inequality and the threat of the natives turning jihadi. A strong sense of cultural unity is essential if the possibility of a nation thriving is to be entertained. Our neighbours, China and Japan, have been successfully able to maintain that possibility. With the fringe of the so-called ‘anti-national’ elements rising, the idea of nationalism is also on the rise. The youth, today, is more enamoured with nationalism as compared to any other cultural identity. This could go a long way and serve as a glue to bind the nation together. At the same time, efforts should be made to revive the cultural roots, although, that is not likely to succeed as much until economic prosperity is achieved to some extent.
